5: This is in my top 25 or so all-time favorite films and much higher on my list of favorite films made during my lifetime. It's the only film I can think of that actually effects my breathing. I've come to find that the relentless score and editing during the chase sequence at the end of the picture results in my breathing more deeply and in tandem with the bass.

This is somewhat consciously done, but it serves to make this sequence that much more effective. The score is absolutely amazing. I can't think of another I enjoy more, with the possible exception of the first two -Qatsi pictures, but those are a rather unique experience.

Day-Lewis gives a superb performance in which he once more melts into the character, but he is also backed up by an outstanding cast to include Stowe, Means, and Studi. When I think of a Native American on the warpath, I think of Studi.

When I think of a Native American in tune with nature, I think of Means. It's that simple. The picture looks fantastic on Blu-Ray as well. The cinematography, use of color, editing, and camera placement are remarkable.

The red bridge scene in which the camera is placed in the middle of the river to best capture the reflection has always struck me, and never more so than on Blu-Ray. The waterfall and mountain ridge locations are classic and timeless.

The battle scenes and choreography are ideal. Mann creates an indelible sense of space and geography that, when accompanied by all the other assets of the film, serves to bring this world alive in a way few films achieve.

This is the kind of picture in which I basically always know just about what the characters are going to say next because I've seen it so many times. each and every scene and performance isn't perfect (Waddington), but any issues I have with the film have only developed after incredibly close scrutinization over numerous viewings.

I absolutely love it, as I love many of Mann's films, but this is without a doubt his masterpiece. I can only imagine what it would have been like with the camera he used for Collateral or Miami Vice.
