Review of The Last Mitterrand (2005) by Suzannah F — 12 Jul 2008
A specifically French film in that it makes no attempt to interest or entertain a non-French (or at least a non-Francophile) audience (I am in favour of such elitism obv).
The script was overly pretentious in its evident attempts at quote-ability and the admiration for Mitterrand grated starkly with the half-hearted attempts to add the film to the Bousquet controversey. The secondary storyline concerning Antoine was boring and unengaging.
Michel Bouquet was excellent. The filmmakers clearly had a sharp understanding of France's uncomfortable balance between memory and forgetting.
The most pretentious review I've written so far. Kudos me.
