Review of The Last Mimzy (2007) by Kay C — 25 Oct 2008
I imagine most kids will like this movie a lot; it has all the essential elements (kids find secret box; mysteries happen; they figure it out while the grownups flounder; it's up to them to save the world) but for an adult there are some painful inconsistencies. We were particularly baffled by how the director went out of his way to make a point about the dangers of the Patriot Act, then had the FBI hardman say "I owe you folks an apology" and exit stage left after witnessing two young children open a portal in the time-space continuum to send a small stuffed rabbit back to the future. You'd think he would have had at least a couple of questions at that point.
That said, this is a fun movie and the child actors are above average. Plus I have a soft spot for it as they filmed the scene with the neurologist in the VPL board room on a night I happened to be working a VR shift. I ran into Joely Richardson outside the elevator and she sympathised with how painful my knee injury looked - it was the day I came off crutches and I was limping like a drunken sailor.
