Review of The Last Mimzy (2007) by Kylie T — 16 Sep 2010
This is a charming if obvious children's/family film about an young brother and sister who find some strange toys on the beach one day. The toys expand their minds and give them unusual intelligence and other abilities.
The tension comes from the growing confusion and fear in their parents as they wonder what's happened to their children. There's also a less believable sub-plot about the government investigating them after one of the toys causes a power blackout.
There are some nice science-fiction ideas behind the origin and purpose of the mysterious toys. The acting is decent, although the kids overdo it a bit. There are surprising moments, but the overall conclusion is not in doubt because of the way the story is told.
The mysteries are fairly easily guessed because of the heavy foreshadowing and exposition in the script. It lacks the emotional punch of, say, E.T., but operates in similar territory.
