Review of The Last Mimzy (2007) by Irina T — 24 Dec 2010
It's hard to rate The Last Mimzy because it's just so average and it's not memorable at all. I think it's because it's loosely adapted from a short story and the directors decide to make a movie that's around one and a half hour long, which is a big challenge. The movie should've been either shorter or had a more solid plot, coz the plot only revolves around the two children trying to send Mimzy back to the past. The additional characters of Noah's science teacher and his fiance are not even necessary in the movie because their story is unimportant - it should've just been a child psychologist and nothing else. The focus should be more on the children.
There should be less characters and less plot that it's trying to achieve to impress the audience. According to the short story, the children actually DO go to an alien destination. What I probably suggest is that the movie focuses on the struggle that the children have to face because they really want to go to the alien world, but they have to leave their parents and also their friends. If the movie focused on Noah getting some emotional support by a new student (before he found the toys with Emma) and finds comfort in her/him as a good friend whom he can talk to, and Emma was given a lot of things by her mom, at least it would show some personal struggle in their part.
It would be more suitable for teenagers too - about the message of leaving your friends and family behind for your own desires, whether it's right or wrong. Well, it's neither.
5/10.
