Review of The Last Kiss (2006) by Jason F — 19 Feb 2009
Was it well written? Moderately so. Was it well performed? Yes. Was it well directed? Mostly. The set up for the final sequence in the movie was rather disappointing. I was hoping for it to make more of an impact but the writing seemed to lose steam about midway through.
Suddenly, the interesting supporting storylines became extraneous (except for Casey Affleck) and none impacted the main storyline between Zach and Jacinda the way it could've/should've. More importantly, the final scenes weren't delivered (in writing or direction) in a fashion that was as powerful as they should've been.
It felt like auto-pilot especially with some hurried editing that didn't seem to fit with the methodical pacing of the rest of the film. The resolution (although admittedly optimistic) is not nearly satisfying or dramatic enough to justify the previous hour and a half of pathos.
The bottom line is the film is 1hr 44mins long -- it felt like 2.5hrs. The best aspect of this film is the performance where the actors effectively drag the viewer down into the depths of melancholy and narcissism right along with them.
