Review of The Last King of Scotland (2006) by Jessica T — 19 May 2011
Forest Whitaker brilliantly portrays the enigmatic Idi Amin - a man of marked contradictions, whose charisma and exuberance flip into intimidating menace in a blink. James McAvoy is overshadowed by the towering Amin, but gives an equally commendable performance as the newly graduated doctor lured by Amin's charm and hospitality.
Both men are enticed by wealth, luxury and power, and succumb to the accompanying darkness in different ways. Uganda itself is a vibrant character in the story. The film pays tribute to the rich, lushness of the Ugandan landscape, and the joviality of its people.
