Review of The Last King of Scotland (2006) by Jeff L — 05 Mar 2012
I rather fancy political drama like this, especially ones with which I am unfamiliar with the history; after all, aren't the drama and entertainment value crippled when one knows the outcome...but that's a different tangent (I'm talking to you, 127 Hours).
Back to the topic at hand: The Last King of Scotland simply didn't have the edge it needed, largely attributable James McAvoy's unbelievable naivete. There were moments with real grit, but also moments that weren't necessary to the story (particularly the movie's sexuality), a la the documentary style zooms and shots that cheapened the movie at times.
By and large, the movie falls short on several front, but is a decent product when judged against its peers.
