Review of The Last Hurrah (1958) by Dave B — 16 Nov 2008
What a wonderful performance by Spencer Tracy! I have read that the movie was thought to be a depiction of the real-life Mayor Curley of Boston. I can remember hearing the name "Mayor Curley" when I first moved to Massachusetts as a young boy, even though his political career was already in the past.
The picture is wonderfully done and gave me fond memories of my youthful years living in the Greater Boston area. In this case, Spencer Tracy plays "Mayor Skeffington," an old-time Irish-American politician in his last political campaign.
It displayed the tension between the Yankee bluebloods and the ascendant Irish and others over political control of the city. I recommend it especially to those who know Boston well.
