Review of The Last House on the Left (2009) by Scot C — 04 Sep 2010
"It's the last house on the left in case you forgot".
If you're planning on having friends over for 'the most cliche bad movie night', then I would recommend this one to be on the list. For the thriller genre, which this is, its a great opportunity to have well executed suspense moments. This doesnt, they are drawn out too long, and eventually fall flat. A thriller that has great moments of suspense, that keeps the audience on the edge of their seat, has intelligent filmmaking behind it. But the big problem for me in this film, is that the antagonists have no motives behind their actions most of the time. Even a psychopath has motives, even if its in their sub conscious. These characters arent psycopaths, and if motives arent made clear to an audience at some point, then the audience feels somewhat unfulfilled. Some characters choices seemed unbelievable in certain scenes as well. And when the antagonists are staying with the family, it seems like the writers lost their imagination, and were just trying to fill in time with unnecessary scenes and dialouge, before the action starts to end off the film. And I realise gore goes along with this kind of genre, but I feel it never really is a great seller, and no film should really on it to give value to the film. Otherwise, the locations for this film were great (South Africa acting as the USA).
