Review of The Last House on the Left (2009) by Richard H — 17 Jul 2011
An unpleasent thriller that tries to modernise the brutal 70's original and does a reasonable job of toning down the intense sadism of the original (which is nigh on unwatchable).
Goldwyn is always watchable and is good in an a-typical role. Sara Paxton is quite good in her thankless task as a victim. Monica potter never quite connects with the story. But the stand-out is Garret Dillahunt, one of America's better character actors.
The violence is shot in a detached style and theres little torture porn to be had here. But it's a sickeningly violent movie and has a long and truly horrible rape scene (that I wussed out and fast forwarded).
The ending is normal stalk and stab stuff and the movie loses its power but the first act (and a half) showed some interesting intra-family dynamics and the central premise of "what lengths will a threatened family go to" is interesting in itself.
Still, this is a fairly forgettable entry into a crowded field....
