Review of The Last House on the Left (2009) by Eytan D — 03 May 2013
Dennis Iliadis's riff on The Last House on the Left is arguably one of the best horror remakes in years in that it makes the most improvements. The original, as great a filmmaker Wes Craven is, is disgusting and at times unforgivably bad, despite the fact that a strong message on human violence is evident.
The remake has a much better soundtrack, more believable violence, a more evident intellectual message, an appropriately squirm-inducing rape scene and an excellent cast. Sara Paxton, Tony Goldwyn, Monica Potter, and Garret Dillahunt are especially fantastic.
On the other side, the character of Sadie is underdeveloped and the film ends unbelievably and cheesily. But overall, Last House sticks to its brutal inspiration and with some great tension and suspense, the film works.
