Review of The Last House on the Left (1972) by Marcus F — 27 Jan 2010
You know, as funny as it sounds, I never knew the synopsis for this Wes Craven classic until I finally got around to seeing it recently. Then when I realized I was merely watching a lesser remake of a Bergman classic, I couldn't help but be a little let down. Craven does add his own brand, but it doesn't compare.
I was entertained enough to understand why this film has such a cult following and why it has remained in pop culture, but still didn't enjoy my time enough for a recommendation. The acting was passable for a low budget feature and considering the actors had little to no prior experience.
The film has moments where it was quite relentless and disturbing, but due to 40 years of cinema playing this same note, this feature seems to be losing its touch. I didn't regret the time I spent sitting and watching it, but it'd take some time convincing me to have to sit and watch it again any time soon...
