Review of The Last House on the Left (1972) by Vincent O — 03 Feb 2011
What makes this such an important film is not the quality of production but actually the year it was produced, remember in 1972 'Hammer' was still churning out Count Dracula movies. A seminal classic together with 'Chain Saw Massacre', Craven and Hooper gave birth to the teenager in peril genre and instead of running away from ghosts or devils, this new breed of enemy were real people.
Some of the violence depicted here is not as graphic as in modern pictures (or in the remake for that matter) but three scenes are more problematic to modern film censors and has only just been released uncut in the UK.
