Review of The Last House on the Left (1972) by Laura J — 10 Mar 2011
This movie is the archetypal psychological horror/exploitation movie of the 70's, with the usual script. A party of unrealistic, depraved psychopaths humiliate and abuse two teenage girls before vengeful parents take justice into their own hands while two policemen are incompetent on a galactic scale.
The movie's storyline is weak, the acting is unequal at best, and the effect mostly rest on crude, graphic violence and some nudity. Interestingly, this kind of movie was replaced in the 80's by horror movies with more symbolic villains, but similar structure.
Wes Craven himself contributed to this shift with Nightmare on Elm street (Craven 1984).
