Low budget shocker. I do believe they made the whole thing for 100k US if Im not mistaken.
Is it great? No. Is it brutal? Yes.
By the standards of the day this was pushing/over the line I'm sure. If I had any intention of watching the remake I would probably watch this first. If your a horror buff that hasn't seen this at least check it out.
