Review of The Last Face (2017) by Richard M — 03 Sep 2017
I thought this was a beautiful and powerful film, magnificently shot and edited with an incredibly moving use of sound as well. It brought me to tears. Sure, people may have squirmed at the what could be a formulaic insertion of a "love story" into a very grim and frequently tragic theme, and sure, I will probably have to see it again to confirm that I loved it so much.
But my heart wept for Sean Penn too, for the fact that he apparently copped so much flak at its Cannes screening in 2016. Seeing this makes me think he is a bold, adventurous and innovative filmmaker, with a masterful command of cinema.
