Review of The Last Exorcism (2010) by Brendan L — 23 Sep 2011
In light of many mockumentary films, The Last Exorcism decides to throw it's hat in and make an attempt to truly scare in this style.
Now, I appreciate the fact that this film isn't a bunch of jump-out scares or cheap scares. There is actually quite a bit of promise in the atmosphere and characters.
I think the acting is decent, but what I like the most is the premise. I think the writers really struck gold with Patrick Fabian's character (Cotton Marcus). I love this character, and the whole premise of him being a con artist that finally meets a real demon is surprisingly fresh and intuitive.
Unfortunately, despite these redeeming qualities The Last Exorcism still doesn't provide the same atmosphere or true horror that the original one does. There are scares here and there, but I didn't feel as if It was truly haunting.
I also did not appreciate the ending, and I felt it was very rushed.
Considering all of this, I am going to give this movie a 3/5. It is worth a watch, but don't expect the same level of horror as The Exorcist.
