Review of The Last Exorcism (2010) by Daniel — 10 Apr 2012
From the production of Eli Roth and Strike Entertainment (Dawn Of The Dead remake) comes yet another faux-documentary by trying to take pages out of past hits such as last year's Paranormal Activity, Exorcism Of Emily Rose, Rosemary's Baby, The Blair Witch Project and yes, The Exorcist.
The story revolves around Rev. Cotton Marcus and how he wanted to prove how exorcisms are fake by bringing a film crew with him to perform one on a young girl named Nell after her father writes a letter to Cotton.
Once he arrives with the crew and "performs" an exorcism with low priced special effects the family believes that the demon who has been controling her, Abalam, is gone for good. All seemed too good until Nell shows up at the hotel where Cotton and the film crew are staying.
Once Nell returns home strange and mysterious actions including family members being harmed begin causing Cotton to believe that Nell is seriously ill and needs psychological help. Is she actually possessed by a demon or is she just frightening everyone on purpose.
All in all, I give the film some credit for trying to come up with something new and making it as real as possible however the movie leaves a sour taste in your mouth and makes you feel like wanting more as the film not only tells you the ending but never really gives you an ending but more of a hault ala Blair Witch and sadly the movie never gives the scares that they had hoped.
A film which would have been better off going straight to video rather than theaters.
