Review of The Last Exorcism (2010) by Steve B — 15 Apr 2012
The Last Exorcism is a deep disappointment to fans of intellectual cinema, or even fans of the horror genre. It fulfils the requirements of neither whilst pretending to be both.
The Last Exorcism has a superb premise. It could have been a stylishly directed horror; a cerebral supernatural thriller with an anti-theist message; or simply a spoof horror in the vein of 'Drag Me To Hell'. So one really must question how it ended up a contrived mess, failing to deliver anything its promotional material offers. I PAID to see her climb a wall! So although I wanted the spoof, I could have accepted any of the other two of my suggestions. Too bad for me, I guess. What you get is a thoughtless, poorly executed mess, exorcising the soul from any good idea that once existed- leaving an empty vessel and a lot of wasted potential.
