Review of The Last Exorcism (2010) by Brian W — 10 Sep 2012
I thought that The Last Exorcism was a surprisingly clever film. I was expecting just another mindless horror movie, but instead what I saw was a lucid idea contrasting faith and science. What I think most people got out of this film was that the scares were pretty bad, but The Last Exorcism was more than just a horror film.
The conflict between faith and science is depicted by Reverend Cotton and Nell's father. Cotton is a man who has lost his faith and simply believes in science being the answer, while Louis is strictly a man of god.
The thing that brings these two together is this girl who may or may not be possessed by a demon. So the debate throughout the whole film is if this is a supernatural event, or something that only the devil can conjure.
And for this reason I think The Last Exorcism succeeds, but as a horror it does not do the trick. I think they should have emphasized the clash of beliefs instead of the usual horror.
