Review of The Last Exorcism (2010) by Kane L — 21 Mar 2014
It does have a brilliant premise and a rather mysterious plot line which makes even the smartest viewer question where it's going. Despite it's entertainment factor and it's apparent cleverness, The Last exorcism poses a complex plot line against other devices that do not compliment each other.
The hand held camera theme juxtaposes negatively with how intricately the plot is established. Whilst the found footage angle of the film gives viewers the vibe that the film is a documentary, the devices incorporated into the plot-line define the film almost as a thriller, which are normally heightened and rather accentuated versions of a narrative.
This juxtaposition cant help but make the film appear somewhat indecisive and inconsistent. That said, the film somehow manages to hold its own. The performances especially from supporting actress Ashley Bell are nothing short of brilliant.
Some of the cast members have the misfortune of portraying unlikeable characters, yet they all manage. The film is well - shot, well - acted, well - written, yet the film attempts to travel in too many directions that it appears somewhat incoherent.
That said, its a blast to watch, and if the action doesn't keep you entranced the performances sure will.
