Review of The Last Emperor (1987) by Ami I — 25 Sep 2010
A really interesting historical story. beautiful costumes and settings, engaging music, and really poignant character journeys. the characters themselves I felt could have been a little better developed and the plot (at least in the standard version) throws so much content at you that it's difficult to fully establish every existing detail--relationship, conflict, state of the world, etc.
certain parts of the film also felt a bit unnecessarily awkward, but that seems to be a recurring theme for Bertolucci. certainly not my favorite biopic, but it's nonetheless enjoyable and a very unique historical perspective.
