Review of The Last Emperor (1987) by Dan T — 21 Mar 2008
This film is not for Internazionale Football Club supporters for whom the last emperor is the alcoholic player Adriano Leite.
The last emperor is born Emperor and has died as an anonymous gardener in Peking. He was a rebel against the strict court protocol. He had a beautiful wife and even a spare wife. The spare wife is the luckiest, having left the Emperor before the disaster. The beautiful wife was brutally treated by the Japanese.
It is impossible to not like this movie which is also a -painting -, I am proud to speak the language of his director: Bernardo Bertolucci, who (not by accident) is the son of a Tuscan poet.
I like how the Emperor keep himself quiet, under the storms of life. And, you know he ought to be very disappointed when he realised to be the plaything of the Japanese, in the Manchurian Kingdom.
A lesson of Culture, A lesson of History.
