Review of The Last Emperor (1987) by Paul J — 12 Sep 2008
There is no denying this film's visual impact. The images seen are superb to behold and the behind the camera artists thoroughly deserved their Oscars for technical skill.
The film though falters in the characterisations. Pu Yi is arrogant and too remote, and although true this may be, one can only be dazzled by the visual delights for so long before one begins to look for more substance. The film does lapse during his teens and early manhood but does finish off excellently. The performances by all are capable.
But not memorable.
