A fantastic film from bernardo bertolluci about the lord of 10,000 years and his reigh in the forbidden city and people's republic of china. I just fell in love with this film although it does make sense to watch the movie twice to get the real thrill and full understanding of this picture. his life imprisoned inside the walls, his entrance into the a world of change,his arrest and release from prison....... peter o toole as his mentor who surprised me yet again with his quick acting tecknique and seriousness,in the case of pu yi we see his development,how he evolves and matures as the years go by.

I loved bertolluci's style of how he makes the film rewind and fastforward especially when depicting his childhood years. he directs with sharpness and control........fantastic movie.
