Review of The Last Emperor (1987) by Johnny W — 01 Feb 2009
This is a very good movie,.
That shows the life of the last emeperor puyi,.
Yet not everything told in the movie might be true,.
But the director catches the heart of puyi - both loneliness and the willingness of seeking of power, the struggle in his mind of begining a emperor or a simple man?
Using great driecting skills + very good music and well written screen play the director has successfully deliver the life of puyi, and the success of showing both sides makes him a real person.I am giving credit to especailly the the study in chinese culture of the director has put into the movie that even a chinese like me is feeling comfortable while listening lines in english that are totally transferable into chinese. the music and the big visual screens shown in the forbidden city didnt miss a single detail of the emperor's life. and the director is an iltalian.
The only weakness in the movie is it didnt explain enough the changes in puyi's mind while he is in prison, which makes it fall in my rating from 90 to 85. but yet it is a very good movie and I urge u to watch it, especailly for those who are interested in chinese history and culture.
PS: maybe some one interested in this: this is a long movie but u wont feel boring, due to the excellent directing + music.
