Review of The Last Emperor (1987) by Calvin D — 25 Apr 2011
Perilously long. However, it is a sincere, thorough examination of a tragic lifestory. Bertolucci echoes conventions used in Attenborough's Ghandi- utilising his own fabulous direction to showcase the beautiful landscape and delve deep into the psyche of the lead character.
It is chock-full of great performances, most notably from John Lone, and of course, the greatest actor in the world, Peter O'Toole.
