Review of The Last Emperor (1987) by Joel H — 15 Aug 2013
The Last Emperor feels like an educational film. I feel like I learned some new things about Chinese history, and I got to see some places I've never seen before, but it's not a great film. Even though the locations and costumes are impressive, the story is very flat, the acting isn't great and the editing is sloppy.
I think the only reason this won Best Picture is because it was the first feature film authorized to film in the Forbidden City.
