Review of The Last Emperor (1987) by Jens T — 10 Aug 2008
The most amazing aspect of this movie was its breathtaking cinematography. Much imitated (and often poorly) by people who want to set their movies in East Asia, it somehow manages to make China look magical without simultaneously rendering it as foreign and Other.
The acting was beautiful, and I applaud the writer for including female points of view in what was a male-heavy cast. It also warmed my heart to see a Best Picture winner that had exactly one major white character.
Sadly, the last half hour nearly killed the movie. I wonder if they switched writers? Its pace and tone was so markedly different from the rest of the movie that I nearly lost interest so close to the ending.
Overall, though, a good movie.
