Review of The Last Emperor (1987) by Jason J — 14 Jun 2011
A remarkable film, The Last Emperor is an epic story of the life of Pu Yi, the last emperor of China, from the commencement of his rule as a three year old, through his imprisonment in the Forbidden City, through the folly of his desperate liaison with the Japanese in Manchuria, to his time as a war criminal and traitor to the Republic.
The cinematography is brilliant, as is the score, and the sweeping epic nature of the film. Peter O'Toole excels as Pu Yi's advisor, RJ and Ryuichi Sakamoto shows his talent by both acting and writing the score.
Best Picture 1987.
