Review of The Last Detail (1973) by Ali B — 16 Nov 2009
Strong, funny, and moving story about a couple of navy officers escorting a young thief to his destination-prison for eight years at a brig. Contrived premise gives way to a freewheeling comedy-drama expertly handled by Director Ashby.
Robert Towne's script, less shocking today than when it was first released, is filled with great lines and zany moments. A young, feral Jack Nicholson gives a terrific performance. Randy Quaid has a memorable, touching turn as the soon-to-be-prisoner, invevitably facing a tragic fate.
Interestingly, if you take out the language, and lower the human stakes considerably, this isn't far off from 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off'!
