Review of The Last Circus (2010) by David G — 08 Dec 2013
This film certainly cements the idea in my head that clowns really are very unstable people. What it doesn't do though, it cement itself into my brain. Perhaps it's a lack of knowledge of the political commentary that makes the over the top plot make me yawn instead of laugh at the satire.
With the satire lost on me the rest descended into the baffling logic of psychic clowns. Should I relate to them? Should I take them as commentary on something? Should I be approaching them on human terms? Should I perhaps just giggle at the gross out absurdity of it? In the end I found it is only as deep or engaging as I find Romero's films, which is to say not very engaging.
An idea here or set here and there that is a moment of brilliance slathered in a sandwich of otherwise average gross out horror/humor/action with average camera work, average acting, average script, and plot holes/ non sequitur elements that only baffle my attempts to figure out what the target audience is.
I think this sandwich needs some mustard, maybe some blue cheese, or perhaps some different bread.
