Review of The Last Boy Scout (1991) by Maria R — 09 Jan 2009
Head or gut? You really can't fully appreciate this Tony Scott directed, Shane Black scripted gem for what it is if ya hadn't seen it when it came out back in December of '91! It's a film that knows what it is and does it exceedingly well.
Does it feel like "Lethal Weapon"? Sure, it does. No surprise! Black wrote that one too. Willis is great as a frazzled detective/former Secret Service who can't find sunshine anywhere. His wife is cheating on him with his best friend, his potty-mouthed daughter has no respect for him and he can hardly get a gig.
When he does get a gig, it leads to dead bodies and a washed-up, pill-popping football star (Wayans) that he initially butts heads with. They soon realize that they both have their own scar tissue and must deal with a corrupt politician involved in fixed football and gambling.
Crazy chases, bloody shootouts and hilarity ensueth, resulting in a satisfying testosterone flick! A classic action flick that feels like tasty leftovers from the 80's!
