Review of The Last Boy Scout (1991) by Scott C — 26 Aug 2012
Without question, one of the most preposterous story-lines in a movie, and also one of the most vulgar.... But I absolutely enjoy watching The Last Boy Scout. You have to put aside the ridiculousness of an NFL owner having a mercenary army going to war against Bruce Willis because of sports gambling.
But once you do... It's like watching Lethal Weapon again (and obviously that's a comparison because Shane Black, one of best action writers and closest friends to Tony Scott wrote both). Yes, it's the token black guy / tough cynical white guy comedy that drives the movie, but Tony Scott embraces it.
Unlike Michael Bay in Bad Boys 2 or Transformers 2 where he celebrates racist humor and it gets in the way, Tony Scott cuts the humor in the same quick cut way he does his violence. Example: in the middle of a car chase where Damon Wayans is trying to inform another car with a sign that it's carrying a bomb al a Speed.
.. He ends up drawing a bomb that in the end looks like an apple and spells bomb "BOM". I roll over laughing every time. The action is vintage Tony Scott it probably has one of the highest body counts in a movie.
I recommend it, and if you are trying to teach your kids about gun safety... Tell them to watch it too.
