Review of The Last Boy Scout (1991) by Harry W — 19 Mar 2013
The Last Boy Scout doesn't stick out as a film, but the standard for action films is low by today's standards and so The Last Boy Scout is above average.
The Last Boy Scout tries to be nothing more than it actually is: a weak plotted formulaic action film with some stupid moments and some random awesome ones. It also utilises a formulaic action duo between Bruce Willis and Damon Wayans, and brings American Football into the plot, as well as a small performance for Halle Berry.
Tony Scott's direction is just what is needed for a film of this calibre, and The Last Boy Scout is fortunate enough to receive it.
The cinematography was even fairly decent, and there was plenty of action and even an ending that went against the standard action film formula.
The screenplay wasn't amazing and Shane Black was overpaid for it, despite a few positive moments. Also, the lighting was a little too dank at times. I also thought that there could have been a few more laughs in there to appropriate the mood of the film, but all in all what matters is that The Last Boy Scout was another Tony Scott film I enjoyed.
