Review of The Last Boy Scout (1991) by Christopher P — 04 Dec 2014
Slick, glossy, violent, and deeply cynical, this is on the surface a typical hard-boiled '90's action movie but shot through with atypical misanthropy. Accusations of misogyny are misplaced; this film hates everyone.
.. No one comes off well, even the little girl who is foul and smart mouthed. Bruce Willis is in typically dry form, smoking on Shane Black's typically funny script, as the world-weary, self-loathing detective who drinks and punches his way through the plot.
In other hands this violent misanthropy would have been indigestible, but Tony's glossy, alpha male confidence treats it like a neo noir with Ward Russell's dense negative and intense primaries somehow makes it all watchable, engaging, entertaining.
