Review of The Last American Virgin (1982) by David Klein — 22 Aug 2009
For a long time, The Last American Virgin plays out like every other teen sex comedy from the eighties. Lame jokes, gratuitous nudity, questionable acting, lots of pop tunes. Nothing special. In fact, I was checking my watch every ten minutes hoping the next "funny" scene would end.
But then the movie started to make me feel really uncomfortable. The main character puts himself in emotionally torturous situations to get close to the girl of his dreams; which are at first kind of funny, but then get really sad and desperate. Then the sexual encounters, which started out innocently enough become incredibly painful to watch. At first I thought maybe I was being too sensitive, or I wasn't getting the joke. But, then the final half hour hits, and The Last American Virgin plays its hand. It leaves all those wacky antics from the first half in the dust to make way for a bitter, cynical final act that really rips apart the cliches of the teen sex genre.
