Review of The Last Airbender (2010) by Brandon L — 07 Oct 2013
Everyone - particularly fellow fans of "Avatar: The Last Airbender" - warned me to stay away from this catastrophe, and for once I regret deciding to make up my own mind. This is inexcusably bad, lacking every ounce of charm, imagination or excitement of the original cartoon.
The dialogue is embarrasingly bad, the plot is confusing as heck (I've seen the original cartoon more than once in its entirety, and even /I/ was like "wait, what the hell is going on now?"), the casting seems to have weird racist undertones (suddenly, inexplicably, the "good guys" are caucasian, and the villains all of middle eastern descent - wtf, Mr.
Shyamalan?), the characters seem entirely and eerily devoid of personality, and the special effects are overused but unimpressive. This thing was horrible enough that I am going to have to rewatch the cartoon immediately to restore hope in the Avatar.
I pray to the spirits they do not allow Shyamalan to proceed with the rest of the trilogy.
