Review of The Last Airbender (2010) by Fenrir L — 20 Jun 2013
I ought to begin by stating that I have never seen any episode of the Avatar cartoon series. That kind of thing is really not my cup of tea. I have no ability to comment on how well Shyamalan adapted the source material.
I don't love The Last Airbender, but it is not as bad as most people and critics claim. My kids and I enjoy watching it together. It is a good family film. I was not excited in 2008 when I heard that this was M. Night's next project. I would rather have seen him direct Devil in 2010, rather than this. I do enjoy the score, the martial arts sequences, and the theme of staying connected to the Earth. I do not like the cast or acting much.
It would not hurt my feelings if Shyamalan sells the sequel rights. If he ever finishes the trilogy, I hope he pulls it off. But I would rather see him put his energy into making more thrillers, which he does so well.
