Review of The Land Before Time (1988) by Dylan P — 05 Sep 2013
I loved this movie as a kid and I love it even more now that I now what makes a good movie. As a kid I never realized all that Littlefoot's mother accomplished by her sacrifice. But after seeing it recently, I realized the social barriers she broke, the growing little foot did, and the leadership skills he aquired, ultimately saving four other children who would have been screwed if she'd lived.
The animation is stunning as well. The battle between Littlefoot's mother and Sharptooth amidst a massive earthquake was especially mindblowing. Perhaps the most effective aesthetic of the movie is the scenery. The inescapable appearance of desolation and devastation give a powerful feeling of a dying earth and make the ending so much more beautiful when the children reach the Great Valley. With such a euphoric ending, any sequel was bound to suck.
