Review of The Ladykillers (2004) by Seth M — 04 Jul 2008
The Coen brothers seem to add a layer of magic to all their movies. "Ladykillers" might not be their best movie, but it is certainly heads and shoulders above most comedies.
This film benefits from the Coen brothers' love of their characters. The con-men all have their own distinct personalities and when in the same room are enigmatically entertaining. Surprisingly, J.K. Simmons, who is great in almost every movie he is in, was the weakest of the characters and Marlon Wayans, who is terrible in almost every movie he is in, was the funniest of the bunch.
This movie will be enjoyable to any Coen brothers fan as it bears all their trademarks. However, it certainly doesn't tread much new ground and as a jumping point for a foray into Coen brothers' comedies "Hudsucker Proxy" and "O' Brother Where Art Thou" are a better place to start.
