The first proper disappointment from the brothers Coen, their most obviously mainstream film taking the wonderful original Ealing comedy and transplanting it to modern Mississippi is a dud. On the plus sides are Irma P.

Halls turn as the firm god-fearing old lady and the Coens do still display their wonderful way with words in Prof. Dorr's academic eloquence. Big missteps are the rest of the criminal cast, being crude or just stupid.

Some rousing gospel music attempts to bouy the movie up, but the best part about the original - the bungled attempts to murder a poor frail old lady - are notably toothless and rushed, with more time spent on the build up to a very routine heist.

Not without a few chuckles, but mostly has the feel of people trying too hard - a big no no in good comedy.
