Review of The Ladykillers (2004) by Sabra E — 05 Sep 2011
I thought I'd give this a go since I'd seen everything else already by the Coen Brothers thinking: why were critics so negative nancy about this movie? Could it really be that bad? The answer is yes.
First of all: I guess for a remake there wasn't a lot of bending room to give strength to a movie about a handful of damn fools trying to rob a casino vault by tunneling to it from an elderly black lady's basement, but then there was Marlon Wayans' f-bomb gansta rapper type character whose hyperbolized black mannerisms were more obnoxious than funny.
The hyperbolized stereotypes in general were obnoxious: the jock, the Chinaman, even the IBA guy in love with a butch Swede called Mountaingirl. This movie should never have been made, Tom Hanks would've been better off making a movie about a dad sending his dyslexic daughter to her first prom or something instead, or Cast Away II: Wilson's Ghost.
