Review of The Ladykillers (2004) by Mike D — 25 Sep 2010
The Coen Brothers' worst movie to date, "The Ladykillers" is a relentlessly crass and unfunny remake of the much-loved 1951 Ealing Street comedy (unseen by me). The fact that the men who gave us "Fargo" and "Miller's Crossing" have been reduced to desperate jokes about irritable bowel syndrome and "funny" character names (Garth Pancake? Really?) is too depressing to contemplate.
Fortunately, they would rebound from this misfire with one of their best movies in years, but it's still hard to tell what drew them to this material or why they were unable to make a decent film out of it.
