Review of The Ladykillers (2004) by Samantha S — 07 Aug 2009

I avoided this film for 5 years, primarily because I love the original so much & was pissed off with another American remake of a classic, but also because I find Tom Hanks very hit & miss (& definitely more "miss" in comedy roles).

Then I found out it was by the Coen brothers, whom I adore generally, so I thought I'd give it a go.

BIG MISTAKE!

Always stick with your 1st instinct.

This was the biggest flop of a movie that I've seen in years. The plot shambled, the actors shuffled & the jokes just lay there twitching.

I laughed 3 times during the 104 minutes that I'll never get back.

It had none of the spark, humour, subtlety or sense of menace that were present in the original.

Give me Alec Guiness & Peter Sellers any day, over Tom Hanks & the talentless Marlon Wayans.

The 1 star I have given it is to be shared between the cat & the wonderful Gospel music.

Everybody should do themselves a favour & see the original - get over your fear of black-and-white films, folks!
