Review of The Ladykillers (2004) by Joan-Of A — 23 Jul 2009
Despite its bad reputation and it being a Americanised remake of a British classic (is there any lower form of film?), the Coen's 11th is not quite as bad as you may have heard. It at least feels more like a Coen brothers movie than previous effort Intolerable Cruelty.
Irma P Hall is the stand out in the role of the Marva Munson, while the likes of Hanks and J.K Simmons are fun too. The main problem with the film is its schizophrenic changes in tone, between the sweet, more Coen-friendly sections largely focused on Hall and Hanks, and the sections with the rest of the robbers (particularly Wayans) which often feel like lower-grade broad comedy.
