Review of The Lady Vanishes (1938) by Devin R — 21 Jun 2008
Alfred Hitchcock's The Lady Vanishes is a mild thriller from the master of suspense. This is basically Flightplan, except on a train. A kindly old woman goes missing on train traveling through Europe, and one determined passenger vows to discover where she has disappeared, with or without the help of the other passengers on board who swear they never saw the woman in question.
The Lady Vanishes starts off nice with a dose of humor and intrigue (as much Hitchcock movies usually do), but it's during the home stretch that the film nearly flies off the tracks; where lack of logic and excessive silliness begins to ramp up.
For its solid set-up and partially successful execution The Lady Vanishes is worth checking out for die-hard Hitchcock fans, but this is definitely not one of his best pictures.
