Review of The Lady Vanishes (1938) by Zach M — 12 Apr 2010
Some of my favourite Hitchcock films are from his last decade in the UK in the 1930s before the move to Hollywood in 1940. The Lady Vanishes is a particular gem that combines suspense, intrigue and a good dash of humour.
It also predates Hitchcock's later descent into misogyny and has strong woman characters as plucky heroines and not as femme fatales. English stereotypes are lampooned as classic British types have to contend with contintentals and their confounded ways of doing things.
