Great fun! Hitchcock takes his time introducing the characters and letting us get to know them before loading them onto a train and introducing the mystery. And we enjoy every delightful moment of it. "The Lady Vanishes" begins, really, as a comedy and evolves into a thriller without ever losing that sense of humor.
It even manages to offer a look at conflicting British theories about how to deal with concerns about Germany in the years leading up to WWII through the actions and attitudes of various of the Brits on the train.
Hitchcock pretty clearly shows his preference.
